The prefix a has a negative meaning. It is added to words of Latin or Greek origin. The variant an is used before vowels.

a + Leukämie = Aleukämie

    When a word starts with a vowel, an is added instead of a:
    a + Alphabet = Analphabet
    Elastitizität Anelasitizität

a is also used:  with adjectives
in neoclassical formation of nouns
