The subjunctive mood occurs much less frequently than the indicative mood. In spite of its German name Möglichkeitsform (possibility form), expressing "possibility" is not its only function. It is used to express different kinds of modal meanings:
This general system is not always observed: modal meanings are very frequently expressed by other means. The subjunctive mood is rather connected to certain types of clauses.
