Grammatical gender

Grammatical gender is much more important in German morphology and syntax than natural gender. The agreement in gender between nouns and other elements in a sentence is always based on grammatical gender. See Natural gender and grammatical gender.

There is not always a direct relation between grammatical gender and natural gender: Therefore, it is very often impossible to predict the grammatical gender of a noun.

The gender of a noun must be explicitly indicated and has to be learned together with it.

Usually, the definite article is used to indicate the gender of a noun:

masculine: der Tisch
feminine: die Lampe
neuter: das Bett

In a few cases, however, the meaning or the form of a noun allows to predict its grammatical gender:

Nouns referring to persons, animal names
