The adjective

Words like the following are called adjectives:

schön, blau, grün, groß, klein, glücklich, unglücklich, kinderlos, einwandfrei, ungewaschen, vieldeutig, geographisch, italienisch, komplementär

The main function of adjectives is to describe characteristics and features of persons, animals, things, situations, etc.

In a sentence, adjectives can have to following syntactic functions:

Attribute of a noun das gute Essen, heftige Krawalle
Attribute of an adjective or adverb  typisch italienische Küche, weit oben
Predicative das Essen ist gut, die Krawalle wurden heftiger
Adverb gut Klavier spielen, heftig protestieren

When they are attributes of a noun, adjectives are usually inflected. They agree in number, gender and case with the noun they accompany. In all other positions in the sentence, adjectives are uninflected.

Many adjectives can be compared:

groß, größer, am größten
unglücklich, unglücklicher, am unglücklichsten

In a sentence, adjectives can be used as independent nouns:

das Schöne, der Alte, die Glückliche, die Verwandten

A special kind of adjectives are the numerals like drei, dritte, drittel, dreierlei, etc.
