When a verb stem ending in s, ß, x, or z is combined with the ending st, the s of the ending merges with the final consonant of the stem. This happens in the second person singular of the present indicative.

Infinitive 2nd pers. sing.
Pres. ind.
lesen du liest
hetzen du hetzt
heißen  du heißt
lassen du lässt

In irregular verbs whose preterite stem (past stem) ends in s, ß or z, the s of the ending of the 2nd person singular can also be deleted. If it is not deleted, an e is added between the stem and the ending:

Infinitive 2nd pers. sing.
Preterite ind.
heißen du hießt
du hießest
lesen du last
du lasest
sitzen du saßt
du saßest
schmelzen du schmolzt
du schmolzest
