When the verb stem is combined with the suffixes t or st, an e has to be added in certain verbs. This e-addition occurs with the following verbs: Verb forms with e-addition occur in the following tenses:

Present indicative

Preterite indicative

  • 2nd person singular of irregular verbs:
    The form with e-addition in the 2nd person singular is considered dated. In modern German, one usually uses the form witout e without addition is used (e.g. fandst instead of fandest, botst instead of botest).
