When the verb stem is combined with the suffixes t or st, an e has to be added in certain verbs. This e-addition occurs with the following verbs:
  • all verbs having a stem that ends in d or t:
    retten, reden, laden, weiden;
    all examples
  • all verbs having a stem that ends in a plosive or fricative + m or n:
    atmen, rechnen, widmen, wappnen;
    all examples
Verb forms with e-addition occur in the following tenses:

Present indicative

Preterite indicative

  • All forms of regular verbs:
    Infinitive Present Preterite indicative
    baden badete, badetest, ...
    beten betete, betetest, ...
    rechnen rechnete, rechnetest, ...
    all examples
  • 2nd person plural irregular verbs:
    Infinitive present  2nd pers.plur.pret.
    bieten botet
    laden ludet
    finden fandet
    all examples
  • 2nd person singular of irregular verbs:
    The form with e-addition in the 2nd person singular is considered dated. In modern German, one usually uses the form witout e without addition is used (e.g. fandst instead of fandest, botst instead of botest).


  • Plural:
