Constituent of the sentence that serves as starting point of the action, the events, the state expressed by the predicate (the verb). The subject is usually a noun, a noun phrase or a pronoun in the nominative case. It agrees in person and number with the finiteverb form of the predicate. E.g. "Ich esse einen Apfel" subject and verb 1st personsingular; "Die Kinder essen einen Apfel" subject and verb 3rd personplural.
